The Robert Barnes Institute exists to provide theological education and formation rooted in Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions.
Established by the Confessional Lutheran Church, the Institute supports the formation of pastors, church workers and laypeople for faithful service in Christ’s Church.
Theology for the Church
Our aim is not simply academic study, but theological formation for confession, ministry and mission. We seek to bring rigorous study of Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions into direct contact with the preaching, teaching, worship and pastoral care of the Church.
Training
The Institute is developing programmes of study in areas including:
- Confessional Lutheran Doctrine
- Biblical Studies
- Homiletics
- Catechesis
- Pastoral Care
- Liturgics
- Church History
Initial programmes will include certificates in Confessional Doctrine, Homiletics, Catechesis and Pastoral Care.
Why Robert Barnes?
Robert Barnes was an English theologian and reformer who studied at Cambridge and later encountered Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon in Germany. He worked for the reform of the English Church according to the Gospel and was executed for his confession of the faith in 1540.
The Institute bears his name as a distinctly British expression of the confessional Lutheran theological tradition.
